Hearing Loss
Hearing loss can typically be divided into two categories (Conductive & Sensorineural):
Conductive Hearing Loss applies to a loss of transmission of sound energy across the mechanisms of the outer and middle ear (external ear canal, tympanic membrane, malleus, incus, stapes). Conductive hearing loss can be caused by cerumen (wax) impaction, perforated eardrum, otitis externa or media (outer or middle ear infection), trauma, otosclerosis, cholesteatoma, etc. Conductive hearing loss is rare but easily diagnosed by a well-trained audiologist and typically treated by a physician.
Sensorineural Hearing Loss occurs in the inner ear, typically in the cochlea where the tiny hair/nerve cells reside. Sensorineural hearing loss can be caused by aging, excessive noise exposure, trauma, congenital, ototoxic medications, viral infections, etc. Most hearing loss is categorized as sensorineural and unfortunately not treatable through traditional medical methods such as surgery. Typically, sensorineural hearing loss is treated via aural rehabilitation by implementing hearing aid technology or other assistive listening devices.
